Etymology

Late Middle English vocal, borrowed from Latin vōcālis (uttering a voice, sounding, speaking), from vōx (a voice, sound, tone) + -ālis (-al, adjectival suffix). Doublet of vowel and vocalis. Compare Old French vocal.
