First attested as vlochouen in 1279. Compound of an unclear first element and the dative plural form of hof (“farmstead, homestead”). The first element may be Middle Dutch vlocke (“waste produced when shearing a sheep”) or a term cognate to Middle Low German vlocke (“flock of sheep”).
