Etymology

Likely from Proto-Albanian *wel-estā, derived from vjel (“to pluck, vintage”) (from Proto-Albanian *wela), cognate to Lithuanian suvalýti (“to harvest, reap”) and Ancient Greek εἴλω (eílō, “to shut in, press”)[1].Pokorny, on the other hand, has linked it with the Latin goddess Vesta (and her Greek equivalent Εστία), which he considers of Illyrian origin.[2]. Matzinger claims it has no known etymology[3]
