From Proto-Albanian *werdza, from Proto-Indo-European *wérǵʰ-e-ti, from *werǵʰ- (“to bind, squeeze”). Cognate with Lithuanian ver̃žti (“to constrain, lace”), Middle High German erwergen (“to scrag, strangle”), Latin urgere (“to press”).[1]
