Etymology
Borrowed from Vietnamese Việt Nam. Sino-Vietnamese word from 越南, composed of 越 (“Yue”) and 南 (“south”). 越 (pronounced ɢʷaːd in Old Chinese)contains a symbol for "battleaxe", and the word also has meanings like to transgress, to rob thus "southern barbarians". Extended senses come from the Vietnam War.
