Etymology

From Middle High German verstān, virstēn, vorstēn, ferstān, from Old High German firstān, firstēn, from Proto-Germanic *frastāną, equivalent to ver- + stehen. Cognate with Dutch verstaan, Middle Low German vorstān. Compare also English forstand.
