French
Etymology
From Old French vernis, verniz, borrowed from Medieval Latin vernīx (accusative singular vernīcem), from veronīx, from Byzantine Greek βερενίκη, βερονίκη (bereníkē, beroníkē, “resin amber”), from Ancient Greek βερενίκιον (bereníkion, “soda”), βερονίκιον (beroníkion), possibly from Βερενίκη (Bereníkē, “Berenice”) (now Benghazi). The derivation from the city may be a false etymology.
