"King of great warriors," from Gaulish *ver- (“over”) + *cingeto (“warrior”) + rix (“king”), from Proto-Celtic *uɸo + *kengeti (“to step”) + *rīxs, from Proto-Indo-European *upo (“under, up from under”) + *(s)keng- (“to limp, walk lamely”) + *h₃rḗǵs (“ruler”).
