Etymology
First attested as mynen faen vp da walda in 1439. Calque of West Frisian Feanwâlden, a compound of Old Frisian fene (“peat bog, marsh”) and the plural form of wald (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The settlement was formed through the fusion of the villages of Sint Johanniswoud and Eslawoud.
