Etymology
From Middle High German vassang, vaschanc, vastschang (“serving of drinks during fasting (i.e. Lent)”), from vast (“fasting”) + schanc (“serving of drinks”), reinterpreted as vastganc (vast + ganc (“procession”)). Cognate with Austrian and Bavarian German Fasching.
