urt
Faroese
Etymology
From Old Norse urt, oblique case form of Proto-Germanic *wrōts, from Proto-Indo-European *wrd- (“root”). Compare with Icelandic jurt, Norwegian Bokmål urt, Norwegian Nynorsk urt, Danish urt, Swedish ört, English wort and Latin rādīx (“root”). Also cognate with Icelandic rót, Old English rōt (whence Middle English root (“the underground part of a plant”) came, whence English root came).
