From Middle English unsemli, probably a partial calque of Old Norse úsǽmiligr (unseemly); equivalent to un- + seemly. Cognate with Icelandic ósæmileg (offensive), Norwegian usømmelig (unseemly), Danish usømmeligt (unseemly).
