uNgulazibuya
Zulu
Etymology
This is a compound word whose second half is izibuya, plural of isibuya (“threshing ground, enclosed yard”). Doke and Vilakazi say that the first part is a contraction of -gulula (“sweep off, skim off, scrape off”), meaning the name of this month refers to sweeping the yard. Bryant says that the first part is the verb -ngula (“remove surface scum”). Faye says the first part is the verb -gula (“be sick”), referring to the time of year when the cattle are satiated, wanting to lie down, and appearing sick.
