A hydronym, attested in Medieval Latin as Tamega. An *-ikos suffixed form, from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia, probably from Proto-Celtic, from Proto-Indo-European *temH- (dark); or alternatively from Proto-Celtic *tā-[1], *tāyo- (to melt, flow), from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (to melt).[2] See also Thames.
