Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *ātuma, related to Proto-Germanic *ēþmaz (breath) and Sanskrit आत्मन् (ātmán, blow, breath, soul), where the inlaut -y- may be secondary[1]. Probably influenced by a dialectal variant of Proto-Indo-European *dhūmos 'smoke'. Compare Old High German toum (vapor, haze, mist), Ancient Greek θῡμός (thūmós, breath, life, soul, heart, spirit, courage, mind, temper, will, anger, wrath), Latin fumus (smoke, steam, vapor).
