单词 Twice Brewed
释义

Twice Brewed

English

Etymology

Named for the Twice Brewed Inn; an old pub in the village. Several folk-tales exist for the name; most referring to the increased strength of beer following rebrewing: Yorkist foot-soldiers demanding stronger beer on the eve of the Battle of Hexham in 1464; General Wade demanding that beer be rebrewed after being disappointed at the strength, during the construction of the Military Road (which runs through the village) in the 1750s; or simply because it was famed with the locals for having strong beer. Another theory is that it was named for lying between two brews (overhanging hill or cliff); possibly as a pun.
