Etymology
Borrowed from Arabic تُونِس (tūnis). Further derivation uncertain, but some possibilities are:
- Derived from a Berber root ens "to lie down", tansawt "to pass the night", thus "encampment".
- Related to the Phoenician goddess Tanit.
