From Middle French tresor, from Old French tresor, from Vulgar Latin *tresaurus, a Gallo-Roman variant of Latin thēsaurus, from Ancient Greek θησαυρός (thēsaurós, “storehouse, treasure”). Eclipsed Old French escat (“treasure”), from Frankish *skatt. See also the doublet thésaurus.
