Etymology

From Latin Transoxiana, from trans (beyond) + Oxus (Amu Darya), literally “lands beyond Oxus”, ultimately after Arabic مَا وَراءَ النَّهْر (mā warāʾa n-nahr, literally what is beyond the river).
