Etymology

From Latin Transoxiana, from trans (“beyond”) + Oxus (“Amu Darya”), literally “lands beyond Oxus”, ultimately after Arabic مَا وَراءَ النَّهْر‎ (mā warāʾa n-nahr, literally “what is beyond the river”).
