Attested since 1851.[1] From Romani čai (“girl; woman; wife”), a feminine form of čavo (“boy”). Derived from the root found in the Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀯 (chāva), corresponding to Pali छाप (chāpa, “the young of an animal”).
