(nautical, slang) Of an officer: having risen from the grade of an ordinary seaman, whose original position in the vessel was forward, before the mast.

Used with various verbs ("come", "go", "crawl", "climb", "creep", etc.) and sometimes with "in" or "up" preceding "through".
