Compound of tanggal (“date”) + merah (“red”) as international convention to mark holiday in calendar with red colour. Compare to Cantonese 紅日/红日 (hung4 jat6-2), Norwegian Bokmål rød dag, Swedish röd dag, and English red letter day.
