- A relation with taeter (“foul, loathsome”).
- From a Proto-Indo-European root common with Lithuanian tingùs (“lazy”), Proto-Slavic *tęžьkъ (“heavy”) and maybe Ancient Greek σικχός (sikkhós, “offensive, sickening”).
