Unknown. Proposals are:

  • Czech táhni (Get out!), from táhnout (to pull), in the military language of the Austro-Hungarian army in WWI, where tachinieren would refer to a soldier being absent without permission.
  • Rotwelsch tarchenen (begging, peddling).
  • Ancient Greek τάχος (tákhos, speed, velocity).
