Inherited from Proto-Slavic *sǫtь with irregular dropping of final consonant -tь (> -ć), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sénti, *sánti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁sonti, verb form of *h₁ésti (“to be”). Cognate with German sind and Latin sunt.
