Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish سوگنمك (söğünmek), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (söyün-), from Proto-Turkic *sȫn- (to fade, disappear).[1]

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (sön-, to come to an end, disappear, go out of fire), Azerbaijani sönmək (to be extinguished), Bashkir һүнеү (hünew, to fade, go out), Chuvash сӳнме (sünme, to fade, go out), Kazakh сөну (sönu, to fade away, disappear), Turkmen sönmek (to fade), Uzbek soʻnmoq (to fade) and Hungarian szűnik (to stop, cease) a Turkic borrowing. Also compare Mongolian сөнөх (sönöx, to die down), Mongolian шөнө (šönö, night).
