Etymology 3
Probably a native word, a semantic variant (doublet) of the noun szeg (“nail”), specifically of its original Proto-Ugric meaning of “wedge” in the sense of a wedge-like projection, corner, wedge-shaped area. It is becoming obsolete even in dialectal usage. In modern Hungarian, mainly its derivative szeglet (“corner”) is used.[1][3][5]
Noun
szeg (plural szegek)
- (regional, archaic) nook
- Synonyms: zug, szeglet
- (obsolete) part, section (chiefly of a settlement)
