Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish صونمق (sunmak, to present), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (sun-, to hold out, offer, present), from Proto-Turkic *sūn- (to stretch, stretch out).[1] Related to Proto-Mongolic *sunu- (to stretch out), (cf. Mongolian сунах (sunax, to extend, stretch)) and Proto-Tungusic *sūn- (to stretch out) (cf. Evenki сӯн (sūn, to stretch out)). Either inherited to all families from a common source or contact induced.[2]
