From Middle French sucer, sucher, succer, from Old French sucer, from Vulgar Latin *sūctiō, *sūctiāre, derived from the supine stem sūctum of Latin sūgō (to suck), from Proto-Indo-European *sewg-, *sewk- (to suck).
