strid (plural strids)

(Britain, dialectal, dated) A narrow passage between precipitous rocks or banks, which looks as if it might be crossed at a stride.
- 1807, William Wordsworth, The Force of Prayer, 17-24:

  For lordly Wharf is there pent in
  With rocks on either side.
  This striding-place is called THE STRID,
  A name which it took of yore:
