Akin to Old Norse -stó (“place of”), Old Frisian stō (“place”), Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐍉𐌾𐌰𐌽 (stōjan, “to judge, place”). Confer the similar usage in forming toponyms in the cognate Indo-Iranian suffix -stan.
