Older stif-, from Old Danish stiup-, styp-, stib-, from Old Norse stjúp-, from Proto-Germanic *steupa- (“bereft, step-”), cgonate with Swedish styv-, English step-, German stief-. In modern Danish influenced by the noun sted (“place, stead”) (virtually = "instead").
