First attested as assem in 1397. Likely a compound of Old Dutch *ask (“ash, Fraxinus excelsior”) and hēm (“home, settlement”). According to an alternative hypothesis, the toponym is a contracted compound of Old Dutch askman (“pirate”) and hēm.
