Etymology 1

Perhaps of North Germanic origin, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *skimpijaną. Cognate with Icelandic skimpa (to scoff at, scorn), German schimpfen (to grumble, scold), Dutch schimpen (to mock, make fun of, scold).
