Inherited from Old Polish się, from Proto-Slavic *sę, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sen, from Proto-Indo-European *swé. Cognate to Old Church Slavonic сѧ (sę).

Usage notes

• Się is used for all grammatical persons, both singular and plural. Się is also used in reflexive verbs, which are often not translated into English as reflexive, for example bać się (“to fear, be afraid of”).
