Borrowed from Min Nan 先生 (sin-seⁿ, “doctor, physician, teacher”), from Middle Chinese 先生 (sen-ʂænɡ, “master, elder”), from 先 (“earlier, first”) + 生 (“born”). Compare Japanese 先生 (sensei, “teacher; elder”).
