Etymology
Ancient Greek σῖγμα (sîgma) + ὀδών (odṓn, “tooth”). So called from the form of the ridges of enamel on the crowns of the worn molars.

- (zoology) Any of the Sigmodontinae tribe of rodents, including all the indigenous rats and mice of America.
