Etymology 1

An anglicization of Welsh Siân, ultimately from Latin Joanna, from Koine Greek Ἰωάννα (Iōánna), from Hebrew יוֹחָנָה‎ (Yôḥānāh, literally “God is gracious”), the feminized form of יְהוֹחָנָן‎ (Yəhōḥānān) which produced John and its many doublets.
