From Proto-Albanian *kśul(V)n, from Proto-Indo-European *kseulo. Compare Ancient Greek ξύλον (xúlon, timber, beam)[1]. Most support aProto-Albanian origin. [2][3] whereas Orel, on the other hand, considers a South Slavic origin; compare Serbo-Croatian šȗlj (block of wood).[4]
