From Proto-Indo-European *sel 'to sneak, creep'. Cognate to Middle Irish seilche (“turtle, tortoise, snail”), English slug, Lithuanian selù, selėti (“slink, sneak into”). Perhaps related to Illyrian Tribe name Seleiitani[1].
