Borrowed from (c. 16th-18th century) Early Modern Spanish Jesús (“Jesus”). In Early Modern Spanish, Spanish 《j》 was pronounced /ʃ/; /ʃ/ became /s/ as common with other early borrowings (compare sabon, singkamas, sugal, sugarol, saro, and tasa).
