Etymology
Calque of Japanese 高等 (kōtō, “higher”) + 中学校 (chūgakkō, “secondary (middle) school”) as sekolah menengah (“high school (US), secondary school (UK)”) + tinggi (“high”). The post-war Japanese term is 高等学校 (kōtōgakkō).
