Etymology

From French esclave (slave) + -ia. From Slave Craton, from English Slavey, from Slave, from French Esclave, calque of Cree word for slave, the Cree exonym for the Slavey people, an Athabaskan aboriginal people who live in the region of the craton, particularly around the Great Slave Lake, itself also named for the Slavey.
