Central Franconian

Alternative forms

  • schwarden (Moselle Franconian; senses 2 and 3)

Etymology

The less common senses “to slap” and “to eat a lot” are derived from the noun Schwaat (pork rind), from Middle High German swart. The sense “to eat much” may also be relevant for “to prate”, though two other intertwined stems suggest themselves: 1.) Middle High German schwadern, swateren (to prate), and 2.) Middle High German swetzen (to prate), related to the former, whence Central Franconian schwätze, whose past participle is geschwat in many Moselle Franconian dialects (compare the same in Luxembourgish schwätzen).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈʃʋaːdə/
