Scharnegoutum
Dutch
Etymology
Potentially attested as scharnum in 1200, attested with certainty as scharnum in 1347. Potentially derived from a compound of skarne (“manure, dungheap”) and Old Frisian hēm (“home, settlement”) and a compound of Golda (“a personal name”) or gold (“gold”) and hēm (“home, settlement”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
