Etymology
From German schachern, from Yiddish שׂאַכערן (sakhern), from Hebrew [script needed] (sāḥar)/[script needed] (śạḵạr). Cognate with Danish sjakre, Norwegian Bokmål sjakre and Norwegian Nynorsk sjakre, sjakra. Etymologically identical to tjacka (“get, buy (colloquial)”) from Romani.
