Etymology

First attested as santpoort in 1389. Etymology unknown. Not derived from Medieval Latin sanctus (“holy”) and porta (“gate”). The toponym is also not a compound of Middle Dutch sant (“sand”) and port (“harbour”), as the area around Velsen was not used for sand extraction until the Early Modern era. The toponym may be a compound of Middle Dutch sant (“sand”) and Medieval Latin porta (“guesthouse”), a name possibly coined as a joke by monks from Egmond Abbey. The element zuid (“south”) was added to distinguish the settlement from Santpoort-Noord.
