Etymology 1

From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *saŋəlaʀ (to stir-fry, cook in a frying pan without oil), possibly via Kapampangan sanglay, archaic form of sangle. Compare Bikol Central sanglag, Hiligaynon sanlag, Cebuano sanglag, Maranao sendag, Indonesian sangrai, and Malay selar. Doublet of sangag. See also sanglal.
