Possibly from either:
- Borrowed from a compound of salag (“full and leveled”) + Malay hati (“emotions”, literally “liver”), according to Potet (2016). Compare dalamhati, luwalhati, pighati, ulohati, and lunggati. Possibly also from Malay sedak (“suffocate; choke”).
- Borrowed from Spanish zaragata (“turmoil; scuffle; quarrel”), according to Lopez (1965). Compare possible doublet saragate.
