Vyno rūsys - Wine cellar
Etymology
Cognate with Latvian rūsa (“pit for storing potatoes”). Further related to Lithuanian raũsti (“to dig”), Latvian ràust (“to rake, dig”).
- According to Derksen it could be, along with Lithuanian raũpti (“to dig”), an extension of the base of ráuti (“to pull out (roots)”), which is related to Proto-Slavic *ryti (“to dig”).
- Alternatively, according to Vasmer, could be related to ру́шить (rúšitʹ, “to raze, tear down”).
